Getting Around Alexandria
Located minutes from Washington D.C., Alexandria, VA is not only a bustling suburb, but a charming city in its own right. Many who work in the D.C. area actually live in Alexandria, owing to the greater availability of housing, safe neighborhoods, and easy commute.
Many residents of the metropolitan D.C. area do not own a car, and public transportation in the area is safe, clean, and easy to navigate. The main form of public transportation is the Metrorail, D.C's underground subway system. The Metro has four stops in the Alexandria area, making the commute to any part of town simple. Metro passes can be purchased at the station per trip, or for longer term use.
Metrorail also provides bus service throughout the Alexandria area. Most buses terminate at one of the Metrorail stations, allowing passengers to catch the subway to all parts of the metro area. Metro stops are labeled with sign boasting a large M at the top, making it easy to navigate the area without getting lost. Bus stops are located every few blocks, and arrive on a fairly regular schedule.
Another great form of public transportation in Alexandria is the King Street Trolley. The Trolley is free to ride, and travels a one-and-a-half-mile section of the city known as Old Town. This section of Alexandria is located between the King Street Station and the Potomac waterfront, and features much of Alexandria's nightlife, shopping, and entertainment. The Trolley runs on a convenient schedule, seven days a week.
The most entertaining way to get around the Alexandria area is undoubtedly by water taxi. The water taxi travels along Alexandria's charming waterfront area, and is a perfect way to get around, or just enjoy a relaxing sightseeing trip. Tickets to ride the water taxi can be purchased at the Alexandria Marina or at the Gaylord Hotel, where the water taxi departs.
Alexandria is a beautiful suburb that features many of the amenities of a large city, as well as the thousands of attractions our nation's capital has to offer just a short ride away. It is rare to find a city with so many convenient options for getting around the city, allowing you to leave your frustration, and your car keys, at home.
